Amanda's lifelong love of animals led her to an unexpected lesson: we rarely see the whole picture. A conversation about compassion, perspective, purpose, and the practices that help us keep showing up when life feels heavy.

Amanda: Some Goodbyes Are Acts of Love

July 10, 20261 min read

In this episode of Unexpected Happiness, Ariel talks with Amanda, Executive Director of Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, about a life shaped by an extraordinary love for animals.

Amanda thought loving animals meant saving them. Her journey took her from volunteering at an animal shelter as a child, to dolphin training in Hawaii, to working at a zoo in Denmark, before ultimately finding her calling rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife.

Along the way, she encountered experiences that challenged everything she thought she knew. Again and again, she found herself in situations that would have been easy to judge. Instead, she learned to step back, look for the bigger picture, and trust that there was often more happening than she could see in the moment.

This conversation is about animals, compassion fatigue, and one small robin flying back into the wild. But more than that, it's about finding the practices that help us stay grounded, process life's hardest moments, and continue showing up with compassion for the people and causes we care about.

Listen to this episode if you want to:

  • Learn how looking for the bigger picture can change the way you experience difficult situations.

  • Hear how Amanda discovered the work she was meant to do through curiosity, persistence, and a lifelong love of animals.

  • Understand what compassion fatigue is and why caring for yourself is essential if you want to keep caring for others.

  • Discover simple practices for staying grounded when life feels emotionally overwhelming.

  • Be reminded that purpose is often found one small step, and one small act of compassion, at a time.
